HALCYON DAYS....
My river ride is very slow
I take in nature as I go
Seeing wing-stilled hawk & snake
As one montage in moving lake....
Then plowing on in gain of speed
The snaking sweep of endless seed
Scattered here and scattered there
Perceiving LIFE-BURSTS everywhere....
Even fish with eyes quite blue
Peek out amid the blackened hue
Who knows at all what lurks beneath?
"MEANDER-FLOAT" in careless beat....
["LEVIATHAN!" one cries below
Flowing arms as serpents go....]
THE PEACE ~ THE JOY ~ the trees so high
As the water greets the river-side
YES! 'tis the 'site' the wise do see
YES: THE BEST IN LIFE is FREE!!!
THE TREE ~ THE SNAKE ~ THE HAWKING SKY!
These treasures calm my waking eye
Fast arrive: [MY LONG-DAY'S END]
Ah Shucks! I'LL DO IT ALL AGAIN!!!

THE SUMMER OF '61:
I was a Yankee fan....Who could blame me....I was at the game when...When Roger Maris hit four home runs in a doubleheader & 'THE MICK' hit two!!! MAGIC WAS IN THE AIR ON THAT JULY 4TH DAY....[Yes, in a perfect world, everyone would be yankees]....AND NOW, I HEAR THERE IS A FILM by Billy Crystal called: "61" about the M&M BOYS>>>HOLY COW! ~ I HEAR THE TWO ACTORS EVEN LOOK LIKE MANTLE & MARIS! I WILL SEE THIS MOVIE AND REPORT ON IT. >>JUST FOR THE RECORD:a little secret~~~~~MICKEY MANTLE MAY HAVE HIT THE LONGEST BALL ~ EVER ~ BY ANYONE, AND THE STORY GOES LIKE THIS: it was an exhibition game, I believe, in Los Angelos, and THE MICK creamed a ball that is reputed to have gone close to 700 feet....NO ONE, NOT RUTH OR REGGIE JACKSON OR FRANK HOWARD were ever accused of hitting a ball 700 feet except THE MICK!!! So you see why I adored THE MICK and everything he did from running to hitting to fielding had a FLARE to it that made 1961 part of my HALCYON DAYS.... |
